Qualifications

To be selected as a Peer Leader with the Center for Leadership, you must be a current Cal Poly student in good academic standing* and have a willingness to grow as a leader. All applicants must complete the Emerging Leadership Certificate (Emerging Leaders Series) with the Center for Leadership by June 2017. Peer Leaders should represent the best interest of Cal Poly and the Center for Leadership.

*(A minimum higher education GPA of 2.3 is considered “good academic standing.”)

Applicants for Peer Leader Roles

1. Be able to commit about 5 hours a week to the Center for Leadership.

2. Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with group facilitation and public speaking.

3. A strong sense of initiative and self-direction.

4. Be comfortable with ambiguity.

5. Have superior organizational skills.

6. Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

7. Be able to receive and follow feedback from professional and graduate staff.

8. Be able to follow through and complete tasks within a given timeline and meet deadlines.

9. Bring personal interests and passions to their work.

10. Demonstrate a willingness to develop and model leadership knowledge, skills, and competencies.

11. Accept the responsibility of being dedicated to the Center for Leadership and serving as role model within the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo communities.

12. Act in good judgment and be accountable for any actions that can be directly associated with Center for Leadership activities and events.

13. Be in good standing with the university.

14. Demonstrated leadership experiences and involvement with Cal Poly (student group involvement, leadership activities/positions, etc.) are preferred, but not required.

Interviews and Selection Process

We will contact strong applicants to participate in a 90 minute group and individual interview process with Center for Leadership staff on Saturday, April 29, 2017. If you are unable to attend this interview day, please notify the Center for Leadership staff at leadership@calpoly.edu.


Final Peer Leader selections will be made and candidates will be notified by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017.


All new Peer Leaders are expected to attend an orientation and meet and greet meeting on Wednesday, May 17 from 8-10 p.m.

Terms of Involvement: May 17th, 2017 - June 30th, 2018*

It is understood, by accepting a Peer Leader position, that your attendance at and participation in all retreats, workshops, and meetings is expected, unless otherwise excused. Selected Peer Leaders will be expected to attend an orientation on May 17, 2017, attend meetings on Wednesdays from 8-10 p.m., and be present for a retreat from Friday, October 6 – Sunday, October 8, 2017.

*You may have the option to volunteer during the summer

Responsibilities

Peer Leaders work under the supervision of the Center for Leadership Coordinator and graduate staff. After participating in leadership training, Peer Leaders will have the opportunity to assist with:

  • Day to day office operations – answering emails and phones, and helping with administrative tasks.
  • Marketing, social media, and communication for the Center’s programs, events, and resources.
  • Participate in staff meetings (Center for Leadership, 1:1 meetings with supervisor, occasional committee meetings, etc.), trainings, and retreats.
  • Create and facilitate events, workshops, and programs
  • Leadership presentations and workshops
  • StrengthsQuest education
  • Student Leadership Summit
  • Emerging and Developing Leaders Series and Certificate
  • Get the Lead Out Podcast
