Peer Leader Position – Cal Poly Center for Leadership
The Center for Leadership is looking for passionate and motivated students to join our team as Peer Leaders—no specific background, experience, or personality type required. Wherever you are on your leadership journey, this role provides a supportive space to develop your skills, connect with others, and make a meaningful impact. As a Peer Leader, you’ll help shape programs, engage with the campus community, and contribute in a way that feels authentic to you.
Position Overview:
Peer Leaders work under the supervision of the Center for Leadership Coordinator and graduate staff. Through leadership training and hands-on experience, Peer Leaders play a vital role in fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment for students exploring leadership development.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Facilitation & Workshops
- Facilitate Leadership Certificate Series sessions each quarter.
- Host leadership workshops for campus partners and student organizations.
Outreach & Engagement
- Represent the Center for Leadership at campus-wide events, including but not limited to:
- Week of Welcome (WOW)
- Open House
- Dexter Lawn & UU tabling
- Assist in promoting programs through active participation in marketing efforts.
Event Support & Operations
- Assist in planning and executing key leadership programs, such as:
- Student Leadership Institute
- Speaker Series
- Leadership Workshops
- Support day-to-day office operations and create an inclusive environment for students visiting the Center.
Professional Development & Team Collaboration
- Attend weekly staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and professional development sessions.
- Engage in ongoing advising and mentorship with Center for Leadership staff.
- Assist in team-building activities to strengthen the Peer Leader community.
Marketing & Social Media
- Contribute to social media engagement (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.) to promote leadership programs and events.
- Assist in the design and distribution of marketing materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work 6-8 hours per week.
- Maintain a minimum cumulative and quarterly GPA of 2.5.
- Remain in good disciplinary standing with the university and community.
- Be enrolled in at least 8 units per quarter (per university policy).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with public speaking.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally via email, responding in a timely manner.
- Effective time management and organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Willingness to develop personal leadership skills and support the growth of others.
- Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
- Openness to feedback, adaptability, and problem-solving in changing situations.
- Demonstrate initiative, accountability, and professionalism as a student leader.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of at least one Center for Leadership Certificate Series, preferably the Emerging Leadership Series Certificate.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Excel, Word, Etc.), Canva, and/or Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).

Peer Leaders serve as role models within the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo communities, upholding the values of integrity, collaboration, and personal growth. Students in this role gain valuable experience in leadership development, public speaking, facilitation, and event planning—building skills applicable to both academic and professional pursuits.
